1. Welcome, Attendance
2. Daily Language Workouts Set 5 - Students will review rules and proper use for semicolons on pages 618-619 in the Write Source textbooks. Next, students will complete the Skillsbook activity on page 21.
3. Genre Shift Assignment - After reading about an unusual occurrence in Lake Tawakoni State Park in Texas, students will determine the genre and subgenre of the writing. After viewing additional pictures, articles, and videos on the same topic, students will brainstorm ways to shift/transform the writing into other genres and subgenres, specifically poetry, fiction (realistic fiction, mystery, fantasy, science fiction) and folklore (fairy tale, myth, or fable). Students will create a rough draft of a new telling (any genre other than non-fiction) of the same scene.
4. Achieve 3000 - Students will continue working on two 3-part pre-loaded assignments through Achieve 3000 by Friday, December 4th.
5. Independent Reading Assignment - For the remainder of the class, students will read and complete at least one entry (for a total of 4) on their Independent Reading Log.
Homework: Complete rough draft of Genre Shift Assignment. Complete Achieve 3000 assignments by December 4th. Work on Independent Reading Assignment - due on Friday, December 18th.

3. Genre Shift Assignment #1 - Students will evaluate their rough draft of a new telling (any genre other than non-fiction) of the Lake Tawakoni State Park spider web. Students will be encouraged to share their writing in small groups and with the whole class. Students will turn in rough drafts.
4. Genre Shift Assignment #2 - Students will study 6 photographs of unexplained phenomena in the natural world. Students will brainstorm ideas about what is going on in each picture. Students will choose one picture for their 2nd genre shift assignment. Students will brainstorm ways to shift/transform the writing into drama (comedy or tragedy), poetry (any form, any style), fiction (realistic fiction, historical fiction, dystopian fiction, mystery, fantasy, science fiction) or folklore (fairy tale, myth, legend, or fable). Students will create a rough draft of a new telling (any genre other than non-fiction) of the scene in the photograph.

Students will refer to rules and proper ways to correct Comma Splices and Run-On Sentences on page 557 in the Write Source textbooks. Students will practice correcting comma splices and run-on sentences in three ways: inserting a semicolon, inserting a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet), and by making the clauses into separate sentences with a period and a capital letter. Students will finish the Skillsbook activity on page 166.
3. Genre Shift Assignment #2 - Students will evaluate their rough draft of a new telling (any genre other than non-fiction) of the photographs of unexplained phenomena in the natural world. 3. Genre Shift Assignment #3 - Students will evaluate Part 1 of Genre Shift Assignment #3: their rough drafts of fictional stories connected to a Harris Burdick illustration/title/caption. Students will share their drafts with the whole class or just one or two classmates to gain feedback. After reading a sample story and its genre-shifted poem, students will brainstorm ways of transforming their own fictional stories into poetic form (14 lines or more - NO acrostics).
Homework: For Monday, turn in rough drafts of 3rd Genre Shift Assignment - fictional story and poem. Continue Independent Reading Assignment - due on Friday, December 18th. Bring independent novel to class on Monday!

2. Independent Reading - Please collect Independent Reading Logs from all students. Remind students that they may turn in their papers late on Tuesday for partial credit.
3. Vocabulary for Success - Lesson 3 - Students will refer to their Cornell notes on the 12 featured words on pages 24-25 in order to respond to the Check Again activity on page 29 and the Practice for Tests activity on page 31. Students may work independently or collaboratively; students will turn in papers for a classwork grade before leaving for lunch at 10:55a.m. Offer students the Practice Quiz page (front and back) to complete and turn in for homework points on Tuesday, December 22nd.
4. "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry - Open a discussion on the topics of gift giving and sacrifice and where the two overlap. Distribute textbooks for students to use in class (please collect before they leave) as they read "The Gift of the Magi" on pages 100-111. Please read the story aloud (or use the audio CD). If you have time, ask students to write out responses (on their own paper) to questions 1 - 3 on page 109.
