1. Welcome to Journalism - Attendance - Students will choose their own seats as they enter the classroom. While I take attendance, students will complete the crazy, random questions and turn it in.
2. Introductions - Using my name plate as an example, students will create their own to learn the names of the people in their group. In turn, each person will introduce themselves to the class by name, grade, Journalism level, newspaper staff position, and the name of their favorite magazine, news publication, and/or news personality.
3. Class Expectations Overview - Students will receive a copy of the Class Expectations sheet, and I will highlight the main points and answer questions.
4. Elements of a Newspaper
Homework: Read, sign, and return class expectations. Read the June issue of The Talon. Using post-it notes, finish making comments about the design and quality of the paper. Be prepared to share in class on Friday.

- Students will take Cornell notes about the elements of the newspaper.
- In small groups, students will then look through an issue of last year's school newspaper to locate and name the defined terms.

Patriot Day
1. Welcome, Attendance - Students will pick up their name plates as they enter the classroom. I will take attendance using the seating chart. Students will turn in signed class expectations.
2. Check and discuss homework comments with your table grouping. Students will compare what comments each made about the June 2015 issue of The Talon while I circulate to give credit for homework completion. Each person will share one opinion/commentary to the class and refer to it by page and location.
3. Quiz on Patriot Day - After taking a quick assessment of student knowledge about 9-11, students will share their ideas about the historic event.
4. Using available technology, students will remind themselves of the facts and photos related to September 11, 2001. Through research and interviews, students will collect information and quotations related to Patriot Day in an effort to inform and persuade their audience on this topic.
5. After a quick review of interview etiquette by Journalism II & III students, all students will use their Talon Staff passes to move about the building for 20 minutes to collect and record information.
Homework: By the end of the block on Tuesday, draft an informative, persuasive article about Patriot Day including at least two quotations from interviews. (@300 words) Include a photograph or infographic with your article.

3. Reporting Assignment #1 - Using available technology, students will continue to review and research the facts and photos related to September 11, 2001. For the remainder of the block, students will organize collected information and quotations related to Patriot Day in an effort to write an article suitable for a high school newspaper. Students will upload articles and pictures on Edmodo.

2. Reporting Assignment #1 - Students who met the deadline for both the article and the photograph with caption will see their names on the list on the screen. Students who did not meet the deadline will make a plan to complete the work to avoid a zero on both assignments. Students should check their Edmodo accounts periodically between today and Monday for feedback on their submissions.
3. Journalism 1 - Students will take notes on the Types of Articles which appear in professional and school newspapers: News, Sports, Entertainment Reviews, Editorials, Features, and Student View. Based on descriptions given, students will find examples of each type in classroom newspapers.
4. Journalism 2 & 3 - Students will peruse older issues of Landstown newspapers (Ocean Lakes and Cox, too) to look for ideas to include in our newspapers this year, especially Doubletruck, front page, editorials, and features.

2. Staff Brainstorming - Students will circulate around the room adding article ideas to giant Post-it Notes for the October issue of The Talon. Categories include News, Features, Editorials, Sports, Student View, and Review. Encourage each other to add ANY idea.
3. Once all students have had a chance to circulate through the room, students will begin constructive commentary about eliminating ideas. Using small Post-it Notes, students will add comments to the giant brainstorming pages to share why ideas should be eliminated. (repetitive or not timely for an October 30th release date)
4. Students will submit their top three requests to the Editor staff for their submission to the October issue of The Talon.
5. Current Events Assignment #1 - Students will review assignment requirements and options. Using laptop computers, students will begin searching for Current Event News Articles to present to the class on Friday.
Homework: Prepare Current Event for Friday, September 25th. Senior Class Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th.

2. Cornell Notes - Newsworthiness Factors - Students will record notes on why articles are newsworthy or not. Students are encouraged to include examples in their notes as to how a story might be newsworthy for more than one reason.
3. Article Assignments - Editor staff will review all article submission requests and assign articles. Prior to sharing assignments with staff members, Mrs. Clay will review choices to minimize repetition.
4. Page Assignments - Editors in Chief will create a 12 or 16-page plan for the October issue of The Talon.

As students listen to each presentation followed by reading each PowerPoint submitted on Edmodo, they will choose at least 3 reflective questions to respond to in writing (on paper only, not on Edmodo) and then turn in for teacher review.

3. Article Assignments - The editor staff will post all article assignments for the October issue. While seniors are attending the assembly, sophomores and juniors will work on their Article Planning Sheets or view current event PowerPoints on Edmodo.
4. Current Events Assignment #1 - Students will finish current event presentations. Students may choose to turn in their notes and reflections on in-class presentations.
