Friday, March 11, 2016 Substitute Plan
1. Vocabulary for Success - Students will turn in homework - VFS pages 76 and 77, Word Associations and Check Again. For classwork, students will complete the practice and quiz for Lesson 7, front and back. Turn in papers before leaving for lunch.
2. Achieve 3000 due today - if students haven't finished, they may work on modules when they have finished the other work. There will be no penalty if students complete all 4 modules by midnight tonight, March 11th.
3. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou - Students may use their own Holt Readers as they complete the Selection Test B/C. Please allow students 25-30 minutes to complete the multiple choice and essay portion. Essay responses should go on their own paper.
4. Video Excerpt of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Students will review the summary of the movie and then watch an excerpt from the 1979 movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKvfM7eMRXU - Be forewarned: it is an older movie, but many people rate it high. After watching about 20 minutes of it, share your thoughts on the young actress who plays Maya Angelou.
5. One Pager - Caged Bird - Have students read and listen to Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird.” There are several recordings of it available online, but my favorite is the one read by Maya Angelou herself. If I were there, I would play it twice through – the first time just to listen and the second to concentrate on the meaning, symbolism, word choice, etc… The poem is printed on page 264 in the Holt textbook which is stored in the classroom. Then using copier paper, have the students create a one-pager with the topic of Caged Bird. Encourage them to decorate the front of the page with the following: Caged Bird, Maya Angelou, 3+ meaningful quotations from the autobiography or poem, and 3+ symbols or images from the autobiography or poem. The page should be filled with these items with no white space showing.
Homework: Your substitute will decide. :)
