1. Attendance – Please take attendance using class roster.
Hi Everyone! I am not feeling well, so I'm missing out on the fun today. Please be on your best behavior for the substitute.
2. Did you Read? Quiz – Students will answer questions about the characters and events in Chapter 12 of To Kill a Mockingbird. (No notes, no book, no help.) Collect all papers before students go to lunch. When students finish the quiz, they should turn in their papers and begin working on the 3 quotation analysis questions (the first one is done for them).
3. After lunch, take attendance again and mark tardies if necessary. Review the correct answers to the quiz and discuss the importance of the chapter, especially Calpurnia taking Jem and Scout to her church, witnessing Lula's disapproval and racist comments, watching Zeebo and the other churchgoers, and meeting Reverend Sykes. Everyone reveals details about themselves but also about their role in Maycomb. Discuss why the film makers chose to leave out this scene from the movie.
4. If I were there, I would have assigned parts in the screenplay version of the novel to read aloud and discuss in class (which I would love for you to do), but I will give you the option of having them read independently/silently from the screenplay or watching the next segment of the film (which I have cued in the CD player of the computer). This group of 9th graders is fun, but a handful of them frequently try to hijack the class. Rather than alert you as to whom they are, I’d like to give them a chance to make good choices. Just leave me a note about what you decided to do and how everyone behaved.
Homework: Read pages 46-66 of the TKAM screenplay. Be ready for a reading check quiz on Thursday.
