Lesson 4. Students will read the narrative non-fiction on pages 46 - 47 of VFS and complete Cornell Notes for Lesson 5.
3. Independent Reading - After lunch, students will turn in their Independent Reading Choices and develop a schedule for reading.
4. Persuasive Writing - Students will use remaining time to work on their first drafts of their multi-paragraph persuasive essay on the topic of crime and appropriate punishment. Students should incorporate at least one quote from a well-known person in their response. Students will include an effective introduction: including hook, bridge, and thesis statement. The first draft of your persuasive essay is due TODAY.
Homework: Read independent reading novel and complete one entry on the log sheet.

1. Learning Targets - Students will correctly pronounce, define, and use new vocabulary words. Students will relate or connect at least 2 words to their personal lives. Students will identify the hook, bridge, and thesis statement in the introductions of their persuasive essays.
2. Persuasive Writing - Students will turn in their first drafts of their multi-paragraph persuasive essay on the topic of crime and appropriate punishment.
3. Vocabulary for Success - Students will read the non-fiction narrative "Tragedy in the Sierra Nevada" on pages 46-47. Students will watch a 5 minute video from History.com on the Donner Party. On their own paper, students will record their thoughts on this story of survival. Based on the article, the video, and their own opinions, students will reflect on the following question: Are human beings essentially civilized, or do they have an underlying instinct to do whatever it takes to survive? After students turn in responses, students will begin work on the Word Talk activity and the Check for Understanding activity on pages 50-51.

1. Vocabulary for Success - As a warm-up, students will correctly spell the Lesson 5 vocabulary words when given their pronunciations. While students are working on the warm-up, Mrs. Clay will return graded practice quizzes. Next, students will review vocabulary on a Kahoot in preparation for the quiz on Thursday.
2. EasyBib Research Lesson in Library - After lunch, students will meet in the library for a lesson on using EasyBib as a research tool. Mrs. Antis and Mrs. Dowdy will direct instruction. After students have created an account and explored the EasyBib features, they will begin researching the person they are reading about in their Independent Reading project.

3. EasyBib Research - Students will reflect on what they reviewed and learned during the library lesson on Tuesday. Students will save their EasyBib username and password to use next week when starting a research assignment related to your Independent Reading topic.

1. Daily Language Workout - Sentence Fragments - Using the Grammar Bytes website, students will practice identifying complete sentences and sentence fragments on Exercise 1 as a class. In small groups, students will complete the front side of Exercise 2 before leaving for lunch. After lunch, students will review graded papers and ask questions if necessary. Students will complete the back side for homework.
2. Writing - For homework, students created statements about Oprah Winfrey (based on their reading, research, and personal knowledge that reveal who she is: background, personality, motivation, appearance, and accomplishments. Students will sort through their sentences and add them onto the correct Walkabout Sheet to show the elements of a biography.
3. Research - Students will review Part 1 of the research assignment on their chosen biography or autobiography. Students will use credible sources to research the individual. If information is difficult to find, students may ask for approval to research another individual. Students will take notes (with citations) on information in each of the following categories: background, identifying details, personality/motivation, quotes & anecdotes, and accomplishments & failures. (minimum of 10 detailed facts in each category) Students are encouraged to use EasyBib to take notes and record citation information.
Homework: Continue work on research. Independent reading log is due on or before Thursday, March 3rd.

LEARNING TARGETS - Students will identify and correct sentence fragments. Students will take notes on the literary non-fiction subgenres: biography, autobiography, and memoir. Students will use credible sources as they take notes and citations for a research assignment.
1. Daily Language Workout - Sentence Fragments - After reviewing their graded classwork from Wednesday, students will work in pairs to complete Exercise 3 on the Grammar Bytes website. When finished, they can begin Exercise 5 (two pages) for homework.
2. Comparison of Biography and Autobiography - Students will review the structural differences between biography and autobiography. Students will define and recognize the literary term: memoir. Students will view a short video on Maya Angelou.
3. Research - Students will continue working on Part 1 of the research assignment on their chosen biography or autobiography. Students will use credible sources to research the individual. Students will take notes (with citations) on information in each of the following categories: background, identifying details, personality/motivation, quotes & anecdotes, and accomplishments & failures. (minimum of 10 detailed facts in each category)
