1. Learning Targets: Students will review the format and the schedule of the CWRA, the 11th grade assessment that will be held on Thursday, February 4th. Students will submit a journal entry on their progress so far on the Literature Circle assignment. Students will work with their Literature Circles.
2. CWRA - College and Work Readiness Assessment - Students will review the testing schedule and location. Students will review the demonstration link to see sample questions and format of the test. All information is linked below this agenda as well as on Edmodo.
3. Literature Circles Project: The Scarlet Letter, A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, The Grapes of Wrath, The Jungle, and A Lesson Before Dying. Students will respond to 6 open-ended questions on Edmodo to gauge their progress so far on the Literature Circle assignment. Students will then meet in small groups to share their first role sheets prior to turning them in for teacher review. Discussion Group leaders will complete a Literature Circle evaluation as well. Groups will confirm the next reading assignment and role for each group member. Students will work independently for the remainder of the block.

2. Vocabulary Word of the Day: ALLEVIATE. Students will take notes on the meaning, part of speech, various forms, etymology, synonyms, antonyms, and usage of the vocabulary word in context. For potential extra credit, students will create their own sentence using a form of the word alleviate and send it/give it to Mrs. Clay for personal feedback.
3. SOL Writing Prep Book - Using their own spiral notebooks or composition books, students will set up their own practice books for the EOC SOL Writing Test. Over the course of the next month, students will be asked to copy notes on the first ten pages. After that, they should tape or glue each SOL prompt released by the VDOE (Virginia Department of Education. Before the official test date, students will study each prompt and brainstorm ways to develop each into a well-written persuasive essay.

The verb, alleviate, stems from the Latin root, levis "light" and is related to modern English words such as elevator and levitate — both words implying a lightening of one's load. Alleviate also has this sense of lightening a burden such as physical pain or emotional duress. You can take medicine to alleviate symptoms or do exercise to alleviate stress. Or if you want a bigger challenge: try alleviating traffic congestion or world hunger. (vocabulary.com)

Learning Targets: Students will pronounce, define, analyze, and use unfamiliar vocabulary words. Students will restate prompts in their own words, narrow prompts to a 2-sided argument, complete T charts to organize their arguments, and create effective thesis statements. Students will work collaboratively with their Literature Circles as they create their LITNIC showcases.
1. Vocabulary Word of the Day: EXACERBATE. Students will take notes on the meaning, part of speech, various forms, etymology, synonyms, antonyms, and usage of the vocabulary word in context. For potential extra credit, students will create their own sentence using a form of the word exacerbate and send it/give it to Mrs. Clay for personal feedback.
2. SOL Writing Prep Book - Students will analyze two released writing prompts (6 & 36), compare T charts that show two sides of the argument for each, and write effective thesis statements for each. For Monday, students will create T charts and a thesis statement for prompts 20 and 23.
3. Literature Circles Project: The Scarlet Letter, A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, The Grapes of Wrath, The Jungle, and A Lesson Before Dying. Students will meet in small groups to work on the elements of their LITNIC showcases.
Homework: Complete T-Charts and thesis statements for Prompts 20 and 23 in your SOL Prep book. Work on LITNIC project which is due Monday, February 29th.

Students will complete one final Honor Journal to evaluate their role in the group and reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the group. Students will restate prompts in their own words, narrow prompts to a 2-sided argument, complete T charts to organize their arguments, and create effective thesis statements.
1. Literature Circle Showcases: LITNIC (Literary Picnic) - Students will set up and present their LITNIC Showcases to the class. After viewing work from each showcase, students will reflect on their experience with the Literature Circles through Honor Journal #3 on Edmodo.
2. SOL Writing Prep Book - Students will analyze two released writing prompts (20 & 23), compare T charts that show two sides of the argument for each, and share effective thesis statements for each. For Wednesday, students will create T charts and a thesis statement for prompts 25 and 46.

For potential extra credit, students will create their own sentence using a form of the word delineate and send it/give it to Mrs. Clay for personal feedback.
2. SOL Writing Prep Book - Students will analyze released writing prompts (20, 23, 25 & 46), compare T charts that show two sides of the argument for each, and write effective thesis statements for each. For Friday, students will create T-charts and a thesis statement for prompts 8 and 10, both of which focus on deconstructing prompts with attributable quotations. Focus on what the prompt is asking - not the quotation! Incorporate the quotation into your response if possible (introduction or conclusion) to help support your opinion.
3. End-of-Course (EOC) Writing - Released Spring 2015 Test - Using the provided answer sheet, students will complete questions 1 - 30 before class begins on Friday.

For potential extra credit, students will create their own sentence using a form of the word corroborate and send it/give it to Mrs. Clay for personal feedback.
2. End-of-Course (EOC) Writing - Released Spring 2015 Test - Using the answer key provided, students will work in pairs to check their homework. Students will ask questions about any problematic questions or ask for clarification of answers.
3. SOL Writing Prep Book - Students will analyze 2 released writing prompts ( 8 and 10), compare T charts that show two sides of the argument for each, and share effective thesis statements for each. Students will add notes on pages 9-10 of their SOL Prep Books on CounterClaim. Students will experiment with writing counterclaim statements for each prompt. Students will begin working on the Holt VA SOL End of Course Writing Practice Test #1.
Homework: For Tuesday, complete Practice Test 1 for Grade 11 Writing.

1. Vocabulary Word of the Day: EMULATE. Students will take notes on the meaning, part of speech, various forms, etymology, synonyms, antonyms, and usage of the vocabulary word in context. For potential extra credit, students will create their own sentence using a form of the word emulate and send it/give it to Mrs. Clay for personal feedback.
2. SOL Writing Prep Book - Students will choose from the remaining SOL prompts and complete one written response from start to finish. Students are encouraged to prewrite, organize, draft, edit, and revise their writing before posting responses for the class to peruse on Edmodo. Essays should be uploaded by the end of the block TODAY, Thursday, March 10th. No points will be deducted if students post before midnight Thursday, March 10th.
3. End-of-Course (EOC) Writing - Holt Practice Test 2 - Students will begin working on the Holt VA SOL End of Course Writing Practice Test #2.
Homework: Upload final draft of essay to Edmodo by midnight tonight. Complete Holt Practice Test #2 before class begins on Monday, March 14th.
