1. Welcome to English 9 - Attendance - Students will choose their own seats as they enter the classroom. While I take attendance, students will complete a quick interest survey of crazy, random questions and turn it in.
2. Introductions - Using my name plate as an example, students will create their own to learn the names of the people in their group. In turn, each person will introduce themselves to the class by name and the name of their favorite book and/or movie.
3. Class Expectations & Course Overview - Students will receive a copy of the Class Expectations sheet, and I will highlight the main points and answer questions. Review Mrs. Clay's class website: www.landstownclay.weebly.com
4. English Trivia Crack Challenge - In small groups, students will try to answer as many questions as possible in the time allotted. Define trivia and connect trivial details to skills learned in English class. Also, connect to National Literacy Day.
5. Introduction to Edmodo - Students will join the English 9 class website, respond to the poll question, and complete their posted introductions to the class.
6. Exit Ticket - Students will turn in their Crazy, Random questions.
Homework: Read, sign, and return the class expectations sheet. Complete Edmodo post and poll.

Friday, September 11, 2015 - Patriot Day
1. Welcome & Attendance - Upon entry, students will pick up name plates and sit in the same seats as Wednesday. While I take attendance, students will turn in signed class expectations sheets for homework points.
2. Edmodo Update - I will share data collected and exemplar responses from Tuesday's Edmodo assignment. Students will share any problems they encountered - in writing.
3. Daily Language Workouts - Students will begin a unit of editing sentences and paragraphs using the Write Source workbook. Students will use the editing and proofreading marks tool guide and a colorful pen or pencil to make changes. All students will have Write Source textbooks on hand to use as reference guides.
4. Introduction to Genre - Students will discuss which types of writing are the most and least appealing. Our focus in the first unit is to compare and contrast the different genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and folklore.
5. Introduction to Big Mouth & Ugly Girl by Joyce Carol Oates - Students will read teaser descriptions about this YA novel. As a class, we will read the opening pages aloud.

2. Edmodo Status Update - Students will login to Edmodo accounts to answer the "What Would You Do? poll question and the Evidence of Sub-genre: Realistic Fiction assignment.
3. Non-fiction News Articles - Students will read two news articles detailing the events of school shootings/bombings. Discuss how the articles are different from the realistic fiction novel we are reading.
4. SRI Testing - After lunch, students will meet in the computer lab to complete the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory).
5. Big Mouth & Ugly Girl - Students will comment on Matt Donaghy's reactions and behavior while being questioned. Students will consider the choices Ursula had up to page 44.
Homework: Read pages 45-82. Be ready for a reading check quiz on Monday. :)

3. VBCPS District Assessment - Grade 9 Writing - Students will move to the computer lab for the Writing Performance Assessment. Once there, they will log-in to SchoolNet and enter the passcode for the Grade 9 Writing Test: 15498. The test number is 27589.
The assessment is 19 multiple choice questions. Students will be able to view results when they are finished. They will receive a classwork grade for their effort and completion.
4. Independent Work - After completing the Writing Performance Assessment, students may finish the SRI or may work on the reading assignment for Big Mouth & Ugly Girl - pages 84-121.
Homework: By Friday, read pages 84-121 of Big Mouth & Ugly Girl.

2. Writing - "A Long, Difficult Race" - Given this title, students will brainstorm/freewrite for 10 minutes about what our first vocabulary story will be about. Discuss the word "ultimately" and "nonetheless" and try to use these words somewhere in your freewriting.
3. Vocabulary for Success - Unit #1 - As a class, we will read the non-fiction magazine article entitled "A Long, Difficult Race." After discussing the two open-ended questions on page 3, students will take turns volunteering to read about each of the 12 vocabulary words on page 4 - 5. In small groups, students will complete the Check for Understanding activity on page 7.
3. Novel Study - Big Mouth & Ugly Girl - Students will take a short answer quiz on the assigned reading: pages 82 - 121. As a class, we will discuss the responses.
4. Independent Work - For the remaining time, students will read in their novels, complete the VBCPS Performance Assessment from Wednesday, or catch up on work on Edmodo.
